Description

How It Works

Paroxetine works by selectively inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin (5-HT) in the central nervous system. This increases serotonin availability in the synaptic cleft, enhancing mood and reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders.

Usage and Safety

Side Effects
Common: Nausea, drowsiness, dizziness, insomnia, dry mouth, sweating, sexual dysfunction.

Less Common: Anxiety, agitation, tremors, blurred vision, constipation, vomiting, weight changes, decreased appetite.

Drug Interactions
May interact with: monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), other SSRIs, SNRIs, tricyclic antidepressants, lithium, tramadol, triptans, anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin), NSAIDs, linezolid, and CYP2D6 inhibitors.

Indications

Paroxetine is indicated for:

  • Major depressive disorder (MDD)

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)

  • Panic disorder

  • Social anxiety disorder

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Contraindications (When Not to Use)

  • Known hypersensitivity to Paroxetine

  • Concurrent use with MAO inhibitors or within 14 days of discontinuation

  • Use with thioridazine or pimozide

Precautions

Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures, bipolar disorder, liver or kidney impairment, or those at risk of bleeding. Dose adjustment may be required in elderly patients.

Warnings

Warning 1:
Antidepressants may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in young adults, especially during initial treatment or dose adjustments.

Warning 2:
Risk of serotonin syndrome when used with other serotonergic drugs; immediate medical attention is required if symptoms occur.

Warning 3:
Abrupt discontinuation may lead to withdrawal symptoms; tapering of dose is recommended.
